Hi everyone. Knowing some great mods like M&T, Imperium Universalis, Iaponia Universalis etc. that change the map, I was wondering if there was a tutorial on how to create a new map. I looked up in the wiki, but everytime I follow their steps my game crashes after hours of effort.

Also, if there is some sort of tool, I would be more than grateful to use it, as it is really harsh to draw a map in paint.net all by myself and then assign each province to a nation one by one through notepad++.

Map modding, often associated with video games, involves creating custom maps or levels within a game's existing framework. The tools and tutorials you'll need can vary depending on the game you want to mod. Here's a general guide on how to get started with map modding:
  1. Select a Game: First, choose a game that you want to create custom maps for. Not all games support modding, so make sure the game you're interested in has a modding community and available tools.
  2. Learn the Basics: Familiarize yourself with the basics of map design and level layout. Understand concepts like player flow, balance, and aesthetics, which are essential for creating enjoyable maps.
  3. Map Editor: Most games that support modding have their own map editors or modding tools. These tools are typically provided by the game developers or the community. For example, the Source Engine has Hammer Editor for games like Half-Life and Portal, and the Unreal Engine has the Unreal Editor. Download and install the appropriate map editor for your chosen game.
  4. Tutorials and Documentation: Seek out tutorials and documentation specific to the map editor you're using. Game-specific forums and modding communities are excellent resources for finding guides and tutorials. YouTube often hosts video tutorials as well.
  5. Practice: Start with simple maps and gradually work your way up to more complex designs. Don't be discouraged by initial challenges; practice is key to improvement.
  6. Testing: Regularly playtest your maps to ensure they're enjoyable and balanced. Make adjustments based on feedback from yourself and others.
  7. Custom Assets: If your mod requires custom assets like textures or models, learn how to create or import them. Graphics editing software like Photoshop or 3D modeling tools like Blender may be needed.
  8. Publish and Share: Once your map is complete, you can typically share it with the modding community. This might involve uploading it to a modding platform, sharing it on game-specific forums, or even publishing it on Steam Workshop if the game supports it.
  9. Community and Feedback: Engage with the modding community for the game you're working on. Share your work, ask for feedback, and collaborate with others on projects.
  10. Legal Considerations: Be aware of any legal restrictions or guidelines related to modding for your chosen game. Some games have specific terms of use that dictate what can and cannot be modded.
Remember that map modding can be a complex and time-consuming endeavor, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. The key is to start small, learn as you go, and gradually work your way up to more ambitious projects. Good luck with your map modding endeavors!
