You can try following whatever they used in this Reddit comment but as someone who also owns Pixel phone, I'd just recommend you use an emulator instead and avoid the hassle of trying to make modded apks work in them.

I'm sharing my case regarding the app being forced to close

1. (Obviously) Run the app and wait until it finishes loading
2. Touch the gamepad icon at the bottom left
3. Try to log in to Google Play Game and an error occurs
4. Close the error message window, wait about 5 seconds, and touch the Continue button.

In my case, using this method, the game runs normally after being forced to close once or twice.

I don't know if it helps, but I deleted the Google Play Game app and the Android system webview app to its original state by removing updates.
